Arch 101 Exercise 6b

In this exercise I was expected to make 2D design, representing hierarchy,
by using only rectangular elements.
Given materials was :
-black cardboard
-craft paper
-newspaper(black and white)

I tried to create a hierarchy with using golden ratio and I didn't change the size of the
newspaper for they can help to understand change in the craft paper. However,
they lost their identities because of their small sizes.

Arch 101 Exercise 8

In this exercise which is my jury project, requirements was:

Design planar elements must be minimum 89.
Includes black, white and atleast two tones of grey.
Design should have key concepts,order,dominance,hierarchy.

I tried to use dominance concept with paralleogram planar elements and paralleogram voids. Actually I believe I was quite succesful with this but my whole design was really symmetric and has some void fluency problems.

Arch 101 Exercise 6c

In this exercise I was expected to make an 3D design with hierarchy.
Given materials was :
-A minimum number of 67 2D elements(squares, rectangles, right triangles)

And key concepts was :
-design elements & relationships
-primary principles of organization
-primary priciples of construction
-order
-proportion
-repetition
-grouping
-hierarchy

I tried to make different size of squares in an order so whole organization could be seen in a hierarchic order. But, I had problems with creating voids.

Arch 101 Exercise 5c

In this exercise I was expected to make an 3D design with dominance or contrast.
Given materials was :
-11 squares
-19 rectangles
-23 right triangles

And key concepts was :
-design elements & relationships
-primary principles of organization
-primary priciples of construction
-order
-proportion
-repetition
-grouping
-dominance & contrast

So, I tried to make contrast organization with using shapes. I tried to create a big triangle in one side and a big square in one side with using smaller units.

Arch 101 Exercise 5b

In this exercise,I was expected to make a 2D design which contains contrast and dominance.

Given Materials was :
-paper band with a width of 1cm
-black cardboarad 29x41

I tried to make squares and rectangles in different sizes, so the biggest one could be dominance. And I thought color of the paper band and cardboard is already contrast, so I didn't do anything about it. However, different sizes of squares made the design hierarchic.

Arch 101 Exercise 4

In this exercise I was expected to make an 3D design without using glue.
Given materials was :
-5 squares
-5 rectangles
-11 right triangles
-7 parallelograms

And key concepts was:
-design elements & relationships
-primary principles of organization
-primary priciples of construction
-order
-proportion
-repetition
-grouping

So, I tried to make my organization with order, however after critisims I took I
realized I wasn't really successfull with making repetition and grouping.

Arch 101 Exercise 3

In this exercise i was expected to make a 3D design without using glue.
Key Concepts was :
-design elements & relationships
-primary principles of organization
-primary priciples of construction
-order
-proportion

Andgiven materials was :
-5 squares
-9 rectangles
-11 right triangles

So, i tried to make an organization with an order and proportion, this is the result.

Rhythm in 2D Art Works

Eugène Jansson, Riddarfjärden, Stockholm
In my research about rhythm in art, I found that rhythm is a movement or procedure with uniform or patterned recurrence of a beat, accent, or the like. Rhythm in art is also very close to this definition. Rhythm in art is a recurrence of elements or motifs at regular or irregular intervals. I believe that this painting has this feature because, when you look at the sea and the sky you can see that there are all same motifs with different colors and different toning. Also, you can see that in the city even there are lots of lights and dark places in it, the motif the artist used are all same, again with different colors and different tonnings.

Hierarchy in 2D Art Works

Francesco Botticini, The Assumption of the Virgin

In my research about “Hierarchy” I found that hierarchy is any system of persons or things ranked one above another. Hierarchy in art is also like this definition. If there is a hierarchy in the art work you are looking at your eyes should be drag over the art work. By doing this you would be to see what is most important for the artist and what is less in order. I believe that in this painting we can see the both examples of the hierarchy. Firstly, there is degree difference between all beings. This is the hierarchy in life. Secondly, when you first look at the picture your eyes will automatically see the most important part of the painting, the top of the painting.   After that your eyes will be drag one by one all layers. In this way, you will understand what artist wants to emphasize. This is the hierarchy in art.

Dominance and Contrast in 2D Art Works

David Stoupakis, The Kindly Ones

I think this painting has both of the features that we are looking for, which are contrast and dominance. Firstly, I think this is a contrast painting because I understand that in my research contrast in design concepts is having opposite colors in it. In this painting girl’s dress is all white and her hair and the bird is all black so this makes the painting contrast. I think this painting has also dominancy in it because when you look at the painting the bird gets all the attention. It is caused by its opposite color to majority of the painting and its big size to girl’s head and body.

Van Gogh, Café Terrace at Night

I also believe that this painting has both of the dominancy and contrast features. Firstly, I think Café Terrace dominates the whole painting because of its color, size and the angle that we see it. Because of that all background stays very weak against Café Terrace and it also caused from contrasty in the painting. The light in the café and the dark in the city gives contrast to the painting which caused by yellow and dark blue colors.
